“Double Browser Trick” Still Breathing?

Last week, I posted about the possibilities of the Citi “double browser trick” dying a slow painful death. But, theres hope.

It appears that for now, some people are still being approved for two Citi AAdvantage cards. That’s like washing down dark chocolate with red wine. Delicious news. You can check out my previous post, or this Flyertalk thread for some data points.

There are still people who haven’t been approved for the two cards, and it’s hard to say why. Everyone’s credit history and card portfolio is different. I wouldn’t apply for the two AA cards with any inquiries on your credit report in the last 95 days, just to be safe.

It appears that if you aren’t approved instantly, the way to go is - “Don’t Call!” Show some patience and it may pay off. I’m usually on the phone, calling the reconsideration department immediately after I’m not approved, so I would have to show some discipline to not pick up the phone. I was actually approved for the Citi AAdvantage cards (again) in my last app party.

Most data points from people who called in had the reps telling them that they couldn’t have two versions of the same card, and then they denied them. Sad days.

There are also new Citi AAdvantage offers. The new offers come with a 50,000 sign-up bonus after meeting minimum spend, 2 Admiral Lounge passes, and a $150 statement credit (after eligible AA purchase). Balling.

I’ve updated my “double browser trick” page with the new links. As usual, there’s no landing page to confirm the bonuses, because these are technically expired links.

It also appears that you can apply for the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card and Citi Hilton HHonors card on the same day, but not two of the same version. Sucks, but still isn’t a bad alternative.

I hope this helps if you’re thinking of doing the “double browser trick.” Please leave your experience down below, or don’t hesitate to email if you have any questions.

Noobtastic.

[I receive a referral for the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card, but not the Citi Hilton, or AAdvantage cards.]

I applied for Citi hilton visa signature and the Citi Hilton Reserve card on 2/4/13 and was approved for both after having to call on both. I applied for the visa signature first, called and got approved, then I applied for the reserve and called and got approved.

Nice. Thanks for the data point!

You mention being approved again for the 2 Citi AAdvantage cards. Wondering if you closed the first accounts and how long you waited between applications? Thanks

I waited 24 months and I closed the cards before reapplying.

I have a pending application with the Citi AmEx and I got an error when I applied to the Citi Visa, though from what I read the application probably did go through. However I’m too afraid to call in and have them notice my double app. Eep!

I would reapply for the Visa since the application probably didn’t go through. I wouldn’t call either – it seems like the best practice is not to call. I hope this helps and best of luck!

It was too late for me to try applying again, but it did end up going through. The bad news is that the AmEx was rejected due to, “You have submitted multiple applications for credit.” Sadness. The Visa was accepted.

Bummer! Well, congrats on your one approval. At least you will still be receiving 50,000 AA miles.

Definitely not the worst thing to hit town. :)
