Promo Spotlight: US Airways Grand Slam
Another great way to earn miles is through a variety of promotions. My favorite promotion this year was the US Airways Grand Slam. The way the Grand Slam works is you get “hits” by using one of US. Airways’ partners, which in turn gets you miles. Buying flowers, transferring miles, signing up for Netflix, even getting lasik surgery…these are all examples of things that would count as a hit. The more hits you get, the more miles you earn. Pretty simple. Beware though, it is very addictive.
This was my first year doing the Grand Slam, so I did have a few blunders. For one, I got a late start. Because I waited so long, I am still checking my US account everyday like a crazy person waiting for my hits to post. I already have an obsessive personality, so me and the Grand Slam are meant for each other.
Once all my hits have posted, I will have raked in about 100k US Dividends miles…not bad for a noob. I plan on using these miles plus the 40k I received signing up for the US Airways Barclays card for a trip in biz class to Euro with the wife (non-peak season of course).
Here are a few of the Grand Slam lessons I learned:
- Start early in the promotion.
- Build up e-rewards and e-miles NOW so that they are ready to transfer. Taking the surveys really does suck. I can only handle one a week.
- Next year I will give my wife a little heads up before she gets overwhelmed with flowers, bears, cookies, magazines, and wine.
- Get my U.S. Airways Barclays card earlier so I’m not sweating its arrival date to get the hit.
